Looking at Garage Shelving: Organizing things better
| March 20, 2016Your garage area may be small or large, but it still houses your car(s) and everything you don’t have space for in your home. You can use the area around the walls – so think vertically – and put up different types of shelves and other storage, which can keep your tools and other items neat and organized.
Here are some ideas for garage shelving and organizing ideas to help you neatly pack those possessions – which you don’t need, but just cannot bear to throw away.
Some different shelving or storage ideas include:
- Kitchen cabinets
Your wife may have been nagging you about remodeling the kitchen for her – she wants something new, modern, and chic. This is your perfect chance to do that. The old kitchen cabinets make for perfect “shelving” or storage space for the garage. Furthermore, the cabinets have doors, so whatever you store inside can be kept hidden and safe, away from prying eyes. You can also fix the cabinets to the walls of the garage, maybe along one wall, and then still have plenty of space for some other storage solutions.
2. Open Shelves
For some people, open shelves are better than closed shelves. They are cheaper and makes for easy access since you don’t need the extra space for swing doors to open. Moreover, you can also easily browse what you have stored. Cabinets with doors, like the kitchen cabinets, allows you to get away with staying disorganized since you can hide the evidence of things being stored in a messy, disorganized fashion. Rather use closed cabinets for things that need to be protected from dirt and dust.
3. Looking vertical
Another way to go is slotted panels along an entire wall. You can put in lock-in hooks, cabinets and shelves so as to utilize the entire wall of space. However, these need to be installed by professionals, and this can make it expensive.
4. Looking up
The overhead space – the garage ceiling – is also a place where you can store things that you do not need every day. For example, you can hang ladders and seasonal sports equipment from the ceiling. Just ensure that the shelves that hang from the ceiling do not block or obstruct the operation of the garage door. Another important reminder is to make sure that the shelves do not scrape the roof of your vehicle – there should be enough space between the shelves and your car’s roof.
5. On leg cabinets
Keeping items off the floor makes it easier to clean and keep your garage neat and tidy. Thus, it is a good idea to buy shelving units or cabinets that are raised on legs.
